Boycot Furthers Web Privacy War

Fort Wayne – A two-choice Facebook questionnaire: Do you plan to sign into Facebook today, or do you plan to keep it off in protest?

The website www.facebookprotest.com is planning a boycott of the social-networking site today, citing privacy concerns as the primary fuel to its fire. As of 10 a.m. Tuesday, the site had amassed nearly 2,000 followers on Twitter and (ironically) more than 4,000 fans on Facebook.

Facebook has 175 million users who sign in daily, according to TechCrunch, a technology website.

One of the critics’ major concerns? A detail in Facebook’s policy that lets advertisers have access to user information. If a user clicks on an ad, Facebook would provide that advertiser with the subscriber’s user ID, the Washington Post reports.

Users can turn off this function, but it’s not easy – especially for the non-Internet-savvy.

Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has responded to the privacy concerns, and on May 26, he unveiled privacy changes in his Facebook blog: “We’ve focused on three things: a single control for your content, more powerful controls for your basic information and an easy control to turn off all applications.” more+

Internet marketer urges companies to develop relationships

The fledgling field of social media is so fast-changing and fluid that some experts say it will remain a skill set or specialty within the larger marketing arena.

But Chad Pollitt went to school — well, went to his computer — to earn a master's certification in Internet marketing, including social media, from the University of San Francisco.

Pollitt, 34, who earned a sales and marketing degree from Indiana University in 1999, was in the first class for the six-month program when he graduated last summer with perfect scores.

“There's no such thing as a real degree in those things,” he says. “The industry changes so fast that no one can come up with a curriculum that's sustainable.

“I've been fortunate enough to work under the wing of some of the top Internet marketing experts in the world. It's all online. It's a very concentrated, in-depth study. It's my passion.”

Pollitt had started working in Internet marketing in 2002, before he did military service in Iraq. He intensified his focus in the field when he returned in 2006.

The certification training was more about people than about programming.

“They first teach you about the psychology of a user online,” Pollitt says. “People only go to the Web for two reasons — to solve a problem or to be entertained. Any form of marketing you do online, you have to take that into account.”

He learned ways to help companies test their value proposition and how customers would find them desirable.

“There's only two tangible assets a Web site can provide a company — either cash, if you're doing e-commerce, or an e-mail address,” he explains, so if the company isn't selling online it should be trying to capture e-mail addresses.  more+
